COREY MARTINEZ INJURY Q&A

Corey went under the knife recently to get some work done on his shoulder and we caught up with him to get all the details. Check out this brief Q&A with @bamatnez.

You recently took a hard slam in San Diego while filming for Red Bull. Can you tell us what happened?
I had been trying to film this grind combo for about two hours and when I landed my feet blew off and spent me sideways off the bike. I held on thinking I’d get out of it fine but right when I got twisted up I felt something weird in my shoulder. It kinda felt like it had pulled out slightly but not all the way. Never having this happen before I was unsure and thought I just sprained my shoulder a bit.

You waited about six weeks to go get your shoulder checked out. What did the doc say and how soon did you go in for surgery?
Yeah, after about six weeks of it slowly getting better I felt like it was taking to long and decided to get a MRI just for piece of mind. Went back a week later and doc said I had a torn labrum. I ask to get in for repair ASAP!

How long is your recovery time and what are you doing for therapy?
Doc says recovery will be about 8-12 weeks. I am only four days post-op and I go in for my first PT in three days. I should know more on what to do for my PT.

Got any trips or projects in the works for when you can start riding again?
Been work on a fun motorcycle trip for Red Bull and filming for Cinema and Dan’s Comp, so I will be busy playing catch up as soon as I can cruise around again.

What do you normally do to occupy your time when you’re injured and can’t ride?
Well, during the first six weeks I was recovering I was trying to stay active by running a bit and going to the gym to workout my lower body and core. Cleaning and cooking tends to take up a lot of my time too. Working on cars, motorcycles and watching tv shows along with movies also keep me busy. I plan on getting back on the same train in a few weeks when my shoulder allows me to.
